How we treat bed bugs

Bed bug removal in three steps

Most bed bug treatments fail because they only spray what they can see. Ours works through the room in order: strip it back, drive heat into every hiding place, then leave a chemical barrier that keeps working after we've gone. Scroll the list to see exactly what happens at each step. Part of the wider Service Giant pest control range.

Room Preparation & Cryo-Freeze

Treatments only perform on clean surfaces, so we strip the room back first. We clear dust and debris from every surface so the residual insecticide bonds properly and keeps working for longer. A cryo-freeze spray kills bed bugs and their eggs on contact, then a heavy vacuum lifts out as many insects and eggs as possible.

  • Dust and debris cleared from every surface
  • Cryo-freeze spray kills bugs and eggs on contact
  • Heavy vacuum of beds, frames and furniture
  • Loose bed and sofa-bed linings cut away

Superheated Steam Treatment

With the room dust-free, we go after the bed bugs you can't see. Superheated steam at 180°C drives lethal heat into bed slats, the joints of bed frames and headboards, and the junction between wall and floor, killing bed bugs and eggs and flushing out any that try to stay hidden.

  • Steam at 180°C
  • Bed slats, frames and headboards
  • Wall and floor junctions, nooks and crannies
  • Flushes hidden bed bugs into the open

Three-Layer Chemical Treatment

The final step keeps protecting the room long after we leave, with three layers working together. An insecticide lacquer disrupts the aggregation pheromones bed bugs use to regroup and lays down a long-lasting chemical barrier. A residual insecticide spray with an insect growth regulator (IGR) follows, and a desiccant powder such as diatomaceous earth (DE) goes into hard harbourage spots like plug sockets, where other treatments aren't suitable.

  • Residual spray with insect growth regulator
  • Desiccant dust (DE) in sockets and voids
  • Long-lasting protection after we leave

Know the signs

How to tell if you have bed bugs

Bed bugs are experts at hiding, so most people spot the evidence before they see a bug. If you notice two or more of these signs, it's time to call us.

  • Bites in lines or clusters

Itchy red bites on arms, neck or legs, often in a row, that appear overnight.

  • Rusty spots on sheets

Small blood smears on bedding or pillowcases where a bug was crushed after feeding.

  • Black dots on seams

Ink-like droppings along mattress seams, slats, headboards and skirting.

  • Shed skins and eggs

Pale, papery skins and tiny white eggs, about 1mm long, tucked into crevices.

  • A sweet, musty smell

Heavy infestations give off a distinctive odour in the bedroom.

  • Live bugs

Flat, apple-seed-sized, reddish-brown insects, most active at night.

FAQ

Bed bug treatment: your questions answered

Straight answers on price, the guarantee and how our treatment works. Still need help? Our team is one call away.

Our bed bug treatment costs £480 per room. That covers all three steps: room preparation with a cryo-freeze spray and heavy vacuum, superheated steam treatment, and the three-layer chemical treatment. We're not VAT registered, so £480 is the full price per room with no VAT to add.

Every treated room comes with a 3-month guarantee. If bed bugs return to a treated room within 3 months, we treat that room again free.

First we prepare the room: we clean away dust and debris, kill bed bugs and eggs on contact with a cryo-freeze spray, vacuum up as many as possible and cut away loose linings inside beds and sofa beds. Second, superheated steam at 180°C reaches into slats, frames, headboards and wall and floor junctions. Third, we apply an insecticide lacquer, a residual spray with an insect growth regulator and a desiccant powder such as diatomaceous earth in spots like plug sockets.

Bed bugs and their eggs hide deep in joints, screw holes and crevices where sprays struggle to reach, and eggs are hard to kill with insecticide alone. Steam at 180°C carries heat into those gaps and kills bed bugs and eggs it touches, so the chemical treatment that follows is working on a much smaller population.

Shop-bought sprays only reach the bugs they touch, and most of an infestation is hidden in seams, frames, sockets and skirting, with eggs that survive and hatch days later. Our method attacks each stage: the cryo-freeze, vacuum and steam remove the bugs and eggs you can reach and the ones you can't, and the insect growth regulator stops any newly hatched bed bug from becoming a breeding adult.

Look for itchy bites in lines or clusters that appear overnight, small rusty blood spots on sheets, black ink-like dots along mattress seams and bed frames, pale shed skins, and in heavier infestations a sweet, musty smell. Seeing a live, flat, reddish-brown insect about the size of an apple seed confirms it.

Yes. Bed bugs travel in luggage, bedding and furniture and can move between rooms through wall and floor voids. That's why we inspect the rooms next to a treated room as standard, so you only pay for the rooms that need treating and nothing is missed.

Yes. Bed bugs are one of the most common pests in hotels, B&Bs, hostels and short-let flats, because guests bring them in with their luggage. We price and treat room by room at £480 per room, so you only pay for the rooms that need it, and every treated room carries the same 3-month guarantee.

Our technicians are NPTA members holding at least the RSPH Level 2 Award in Pest Management, and they apply every product according to its label. Before we start, your technician tells you how long to keep the room empty after the chemical step, and when it's ready to use again.

Room preparation is the first step of our treatment, so we do the heavy work: cleaning, cryo-freezing, vacuuming and cutting away loose linings. When we call you back to book, we'll tell you anything you need to do before we arrive.

Leave your name and number on this page or call us, and we'll ring you back to book a visit. Same-day visits are often possible, subject to seasonal availability.
